Technologie en innovatie
In order to realise Televic's mission to develop and manufacture
a range of high quality, superior products and solutions for audio,
multimedia and communication markets, the R&D department of
Televic has a clear focus on innovative technologies; more
specifically core technologies such as digital audio, digital video
and networks. In each of these domains, the R&D team has
outstanding expertise and is continuously improving that knowledge
based on research project in collaboration with research
institutes, universities and engineering schools.
Digital Audio
In the area of digital audio, the Televic R&D team not only has
the skills needed to realise complex digital audio systems that are
capable of transporting and mixing high quality audio information
at extremely low latencies, but the team is also actively
researching improvement routes for these systems.
Part of the research is oriented to improve the speech
intelligibility and uses well known techniques such as de-popping
of time/frequency variant amplification, as well as more advanced
formant modification techniques which mimic human behaivour to
improve the articulation of speech.
Besides intelligibility, the research activities are also looking
at feedback phenomena (the Larsen-effect) and devise new techniques
to solve the limitations of existing methods.
Digital video
As more and more applications are integrating video, it is
important as an innovative company to understand the technolgy
involved completely and to be able to apply the knowledge
successfully in te market. To this extend Televic has developed a
special MPEG4 compliant codec designed to operate in very tight
low-latency condtions while relying on general purpose processors
such as a Pentium-III. This technology has been applied in the
multimedia language lab solution and is cabable of encoding live
CIF images while guaranteeing an end-to-end latency of less than
100ms, using a standard IP-network.
Digital networks
Extensive knowledge of digital networks is very important when
dealing with digital audio and video. In the past, all digital
transport networks were based on proprietary protocols but, as is
the case for most networks, the future lays in IP-based networks.
Although IP-networks are well known in office environments for
internet use, it is far from obvious to apply them in the real-time
low-latency applications typical for Televic's niche markets.
For Televic's applications specific quality of service (QoS)
requirements have to be taken into account. To provide such
solutions, Televic uses special equipment or develops own solutions
within the limits of IP-standards if no standard devices are
available on the market.
Besides the development of network devices, Televic R&D has
also the research skills and tools (such as the Click modular
router) to simulate or emulate different network conditions, thus
enabling realistic testing inside the Televic R&D lab of
different network characteristics such as bandwidth limiations,
jitter, latency, etc.
