AssessmentQ is an online practice and test application that is being developed by Televic Education. The speaking exercise is a feature that is widely used by translation and interpretation institutions. In this exercise, the student must translate an audio or video fragment and that translation is also recorded.
We would like to extend the possibilities of this activity with some features that are highly requested by the interpretation community like true consecutive mode and dual track audio playback. In true consecutive mode the student can interrupt the source speech at any given moment for translation or the teacher can add bookmarks on the source speech at which the student must start translating. Dual track audio playback means the source is played back in the left ear, and the translation in the right ear. Implementation of there features will be in typescript, using the Web Audio and WebRTC APIs of the browser.
In the second part of the topic, a microservice that processes the recordings will have to be developed. With this service, the source speech and the recording must be merged into a single (video) file (alternating source and recording at specific times) that is easy to evaluate for the teacher. First, the different methods and platforms for that service will have to be evaluated (VM, Azure MediaServices or Functions, Docker, ffmpeg, ...). In a second phase the chosen technology will have to be implemented.
