About Heriot Watt University

Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh continues to remain at the forefront of Language Learning, Interpreting & Sign Language Interpreter Training with high-end Technology suites among the finest in Europe & modelled on those used by the European Parliament & the UN.

Project details

7 Televic Labs are now installed at the University which include 3 large Interpreting Suites, 3 language labs & a dedicated suite which helps to support the first British Sign Language (BSL) interpreting degree in Scotland. The first generation of Televic systems were installed at Heriot-Watt in 2004, and after a £700k refurbishment of the labs in 2012 have continued to provide tutors & students with the best technology tools to support their learning & development ahead of their professional careers.

In 2017 the largest of Heriot-Watt’s interpreting suites was equipped with Televic’s newest & most advanced Interpreter Training System. The suite houses 19 fully equipped interpreting booths which are used for simultaneous, consecutive & public service interpreting.

Having the Televic interpreter training system installed in our labs means that we can provide our interpreting students with authentic experiences of simultaneous interpreting, replicating the set-up of conference rooms used at the United Nations, European Parliament & European Commission. The students benefit immensely from this real-world set-up which prepares them to enter the interpreting profession upon graduation.
