Topic
On-board rail systems exist more and more out of many microservices instead of a few monolithic programs. This reduces the complexity of each program and allows for faster development cycles. However, the difficulty of performance analysis and debugging increases due to the distributed decision making. Therefore, powerful monitoring of the full system is required.
In the cloud space, this is well known and performant solutions are easily available. However, these solutions often take the resource availability of the cloud for granted. They are not optimized for minimal overhead in processing power, storage accesses and memory availability. This is however important is small network environments such as trains, where compute power, memory and storage are highly limited.
This topic will validate and test existing 'cloud' solutions for their usability on embedded devices in trains and implement such a monitoring system on a virtual train. The student will develop algorithms that react to specific events and develop an optimal deployment strategy. The student will verify his developed system on a virtual train.
